SpåraKOFF celebrates its 10th birthdayThe new and improved pub tram returns: SpåraKOFF celebrates its 10th birthday
SpåraKOFF will be 10 years old this year, and to mark the event, the
pub tram was renovated both on the inside and outside. AV technology
was added to make the tram more suitable for any kind of function from
private birthday parties to company meetings. SpåraKOFF can be hired
all year round, but in addition, a scheduled route is operated during
the summer months – a great option for a sightseeing tour of the
capital!

SpåraKOFF not only offers the opportunity for sightseeing without
getting your feet wet even if it rains, but you can also enjoy a beer
while passing some of Helsinki’s most famous sights, including the
Ateneum Art Museum, Finlandia hall, the Parliament building, the
Presidential Palace and the Senate Square with its beautiful cathedral.
Route maps can be found on board, containing information about the
sights in Finnish and in English. When hiring SpåraKOFF for a private
function, the route can be adjusted according to the customer’s wishes.
A facelift for the 10-year-old
In the 10 years that SpåraKOFF has been a part of Helsinki’s city
culture it has carried over 100,000 people. The tram was renovated for
the event; the most visible modifications are new headlights and a
fresh coat of red paint on the outside. On the inside, some changes
have been made in the decor and a new LCD screen has been installed on
the back wall, giving passengers the opportunity to observe the traffic
from the driver’s perspective on screen.
Throughout its existence, SpåraKOFF has been a popular venue for
private functions. The new AV technology makes the tram suitable for
many different kinds of events. The tram can now be used even as a
unique meeting venue, as a laptop can be attached to the LCD screen,
and a CD and DVD player are also provided.
From ordinary vehicle to stylish pub tram
HKL ordered 15 HM V type trams in 1957, the last of which, number 15,
was taken into use in October 1959. After a couple of million
kilometers and over 20 million passengers in 35 years, the tram was to
go through some heavy-duty maintenance at the end of 1994.
Within a few months, the tram had undergone a complete makeover; the
shiny new pub tram fully equipped with a bar and lavatories was
completed in spring 1995. The décor was changed entirely, and the tram
was painted a bright, “KOFF” red. In addition, the tram was given a new
number, 175, to mark Sinebrychoff’s 175th birthday in 1995. A
competition was arranged to come up with suitable names for the pub
tram, and as a result, “SpåraKOFF” began operating on May Day’s eve
1995.
